How to coach and teach the basketball 2-1-2 half-court
zone defenseThe 2-1-2 basketball zone defense is strong underneath against good pivot players. It is especially strong in the rebounding triangle area. It is also an excellent defense to use if you want to fast break as it allows one man, usually X1, to break as soon as the offensive team shoots the ball. This is often called, "cherry picking." The two-one-two is vulnerable from the weak side along the baseline from jump shooters on the side at a forty-five-degree angle, from the medium shooting areas, and the top of the key. X1 and X2 should both be aggressive guards. X5 should be your tallest player with the longest arms; X4 should be your best rebounding forward, and X3 the more mobile forward. | Diagram 2-1-2 (1) Slides by the defense are numbered as the ball is passed. An arrow without a number indicates the initial adjustments of the defensive players X1, X2, X3, X4 and X5. Numbered arrows 1, 2, and 3 are the slides they make with each pass of the ball. Movements of the offensive players are also designated with unnumbered arrows. Offensive player 1 is starting their offense to the left side area. The ball is passed (1) from 1 to 2, (2) from 2 to 3 who has cut to the high-post area, and (3) from 3 to 5 who has moved up from the baseline-side offensive right corner. | |
