How to coach and teach the basketball 2-2-1 half-court zone defense

The two-two-one half-court zone defense is a good basic defense from which to employ half-court trapping procedures coupled with a good fast-break. It is a good defense against teams that work for close-in shots; however, it is weak at the top of the key. Therefore, the two front players must sag to prevent good shooting opportunities from that area.

This is an aggressive defense that can be used well by a small, but fast team, with one big rebounder. In the following diagram X5 is the position for that big rebounder.

Arrows 1, 2, and 3 indicate the defensive slides as the ball is passed (1) 2 to 1, (2) 1 to 3, and (3) 3 to 2 who has moved from the outer free-throw circle to the low post. The arrows without numbers originating at the defensive positions indicate initial adjustment by the defense from their original positions to compensate for the ball's being on the offensive, right-side of the court.
