How to Coach the One-Four Quick Scoring Basketball Offense - Part 3 (Dribble Option: Against a Zone)Dribble Option: Against a ZoneThe dribble quickie is a good option to use against a one-man front, because the quarterback has one defensive man playing him. The dribble option is also effective against a half-court zone press, with the offense beginning farther out on the court. Against a 1-2-2 zone, the dribble option is run exactly the same as against a man-to-man defense, except #5 may need to go higher to receive #1’s pass.
| | DIAGRAM QH10: #1 chooses to drive off #4’s screen. He will probably be picked up by defender 2; therefore, he looks for #4 rolling off the screen, or #2 in the corner. If #1 passes to #2, he should look for #4 down low. Most likely #1 will fake to #4 and pass to #5 on the opposite post. #5 looks quickly to #4 who has sealed defender 5 on his back. If #5 can’t pass to #4, he looks to #3 who might hit #4 low, or take the shot. In case of the later, #4, #5, and #2 hit the offensive board. If #3 does not shoot you are in the Passing Game Offense with #5 and #4 already in position. |
| | DIAGRAM QH11: Here, the 1-3-1 defense signals the offense to move out higher. #1 still gets the screen from #4 or #5 which prevents a quick double team. #1 could pass quickly to #2 or #5 even before the screen is set by #4. A good shot should become available as soon as the ball gets to the baseline. Sometimes the shot is taken at the baseline on a pass from #2 to #4; however, if #5 gets the ball, #3 or #4 will be wide open. If the pass goes to the baseline, a good shot often presents itself on a return pass to the outside. Here, again, you can move into the Passing Game Offense once the initial movement is completed. | | Related articles: [Part 1] [Part 2] [Part 3] |
